We all love our planet and of course we care about ourselves and our families. So why aren’t we all living eco-friendly non-toxic lives? Because its darn right overwhelming! By default, plastic is shoved at us whenever we shop or go out to eat. Personal care products and make-up contain unsafe chemicals that can harm our health. Our grocery stores shelves are lined with boxed processed foods containing less than healthy ingredients. Powerful marketing and misleading labels and can also foil our good intentions as we try to find healthy foods. Let’s be honest, we simply don’t have time to research every ingredient. We’ve also been taught to trust companies that don’t have our best interests at heart. So yes, this is hard but I encourage you to stay vigilant. This isn’t an all or nothing endeavor. Progress can be made one day at a time.
Knowledge is Power but Resources are a Great Shortcut!
My philosophy is let the experts do the work! Just know that the food industry and the FDA are not always your friends when it comes to full disclosure of food and product dangers. Here are my top 7 resources on non-toxic living from people or groups that I trust.
She claims to be the World’s Leading Expert on Toxic-Free Products since 1978. I’m a big fan. Debra’s site has valuable recommendations on non-toxic alternatives. She’s been paying attention to product ingredients and labeling longer than most of us. Read her post on the need for disclosure and correct product labeling to understand the problem. She’s passionate about toxic-free products because her own health was impacted in 1978 when she suffered from headaches, insomnia and fatigue. She later found that she was sensitive to chemicals in household products. I encourage you to read her story. She is a frequent podcast/YouTube guest. Listen to her great talk on Air Purifiers. 2. Jen O’Sullivan – Vitality Life
Jen O’Sullivan is an author and essential oils expert. She has an amazing ability to explain the complex in simple terms. She’s a born teacher. Her books are great references on how to live a non-toxic life using essential oils. Her Facebook group The Human Body and Essential Oils contains tons of information and videos to help novice and advanced users with ideas and recipes.
Environmental Working Group is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting our health and the environment. They report on the impacts of toxic chemicals including Monsanto’s herbicide, Glyphosate which was marketed as Roundup and is widely used across the U.S. Glyphosate has been deemed as probably carcinogenic to humans. Studies show that this chemical is in most of our food including breakfast cereals. EWG also reports on the status of water and chemicals in personal care products and make-up. Their cosmetics database has over 70,000 products. The EWG app is handy for checking product safety on the go.
This is a great channel for non-toxic makeup tips and cleaning. Anne shares a variety of lifestyle tips. Don’t go shopping without this app installed on your phone. Think dirty is a huge database of products, ingredients and their potential dangers. Look up personal care, make-up and household cleaning products before you even leave the store. Think dirty allows you to scan the barcode and see a products rating for safety along with details about the verifiable ingredients. It works on both iPhones and Androids.
PubMed is the go-to resource for those of you interested in scientific fact based on non-biased research. The site contains citations and abstracts from the biomedical and health fields. Personally, I use it to research the effects of chemicals or validate the effectiveness of essential oils and other natural substances. There is nothing like having real science to back up claims. I’m a fan of doing some research.
