Few realize that the average home has 3-10 gallons of toxic materials ranging from laundry detergent and kitchen cleaners to weed killers and pesticides. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the air inside a typical home is 2-5 times more polluted than the air immediately outside. This can be very unhealthy for our families and especially young children.
Ridding your entire house of toxic chemicals can seem overwhelming. The best approach is one day at a time – one room at a time – one product at a time.
My choice was the laundry room. Some of the scariest chemicals in our homes are in laundry detergent, fabric softeners and stain removers. I have three daughters. Two of them have environmental and food allergies. We were washing their clothes in chemicals and exposing them to those toxins all day. Chemicals were in their clothing, their bedsheets and towels. That was one of the scariest thoughts. We are poisoning ourselves and our families.
Chemicals absorbed in the skin can be found in the bloodstream within minutes. Toxins that get in through our skin can be more dangerous that through the mouth. Our digestive system detoxifies through the kidneys and liver. Chemicals absorbed through the skin bypass our natural detoxification and go straight into our bloodstream.
Toxic Chemicals in your laundry room
According to studies, a third of all scented detergents contain at least one chemical that has been identified by the EPA as cancer causing. One third! So what’s lurking in your favorite detergent?
- Fragrance – chemicals are combined to create a fragrance designed to make you believe your clothes are clean because they smell clean. Companies don’t have to list the chemicals used to create these fragrances and most are toxic.
- 1,4-dioxane – this known carcinogen is easily absorbed through the skin. It’s been linked with skin allergies, brain toxicity, kidney disease, hormone disruption and impairment of the nervous system. Many beauty and cleaning products contain over 1,000 times the amount found to cause cancer in animal studies.
- Phenols (Nonylphenol Ethoxylate) – NPE is frequently used in laundry detergents and is a known endocrine disruptor and estrogen mimicker that can cause hormonal problems and cancer.
- Phosphates – these chemicals make detergents more effective by removing hard-water minerals. When released into our water system, they cause an imbalance in the ecosystem which can be harmful to the environment. Europe and Canada have banned some phosphates but in the United States there are both partial or full bans depending on which state you live in.
These are just a few of the culprits. Sometimes it’s hard to know what all of those strange ingredients are and what they could be doing to our bodies and the environment. Even products labeled as organic or green can still contain toxic chemicals! If you read the label and find words you can’t pronounce, be careful.
Chemical Free Laundry Detergent
Many of us don’t have the time to research and manufacturers count on that to sell their products. If everyone knew the truth, there is no way people would bring these chemical laden products into their homes. So what’s the quick and safe answer that we need? We know what products we can’t trust and should throw out. But what CAN we trust?
