Tech Free Hour
You’ve all heard of the technology or screen free week or weekend. A week might be like going cold turkey for some of you. Let’s start slow and just go for an hour or two without our phones. Experience freedom from our digital leashes.
Places to go tech-free
While driving in your car
Put that freakin’ phone down!!! Now many of you are saying, I don’t text while driving. I’m not a distracted driver. On any given day I see a dozen or more people not only driving while on the phone, but holding the phone to their ear as if Bluetooth hasn’t been invented yet. You can usually tell who these people are. It’s the driver that drifts into your lane without signaling. How can you signal a turn while holding a phone – very tricky! Ever wonder why the guy in front of you seems to be driving too slowly? As you pass him, you’ll see that he’s too busy on the phone to drive the speed limit. It’s really not necessary to check emails or have a full conversation while driving. Not only is it dangerous to you and other drivers but you’re missing out on the joy of driving. Try this…
- Put your phone away while driving – even on short errands
- If you haven’t already, setup Bluetooth and be hands free.
Lunch for most of us is a one hour break from our work day. I use this hour to relax and enjoy a nice meal. If I’m lucky, I’m enjoying it with my husband. I try not to use my phone during the meal. While it’s tempting to check and reply to email, update your status on Facebook or check Instagram, you’ll feel more rested and ready for the second half of your day, if you put the technology away for the hour.
Once you’ve closed Outlook, logged off of Skype, and gotten up from your desk, try to go tech free. Put away your phone and spend at least an hour away from devices. Save the evening for time with family. Encourage them to go tech free. Now that might be pushing it especially if you have teenagers but give it a try.
Wake up tech free
Do you wake up and immediately reach for your phone? After you hit the alarm clock, don’t turn on the TV or be tempted to ask Siri what’s going on in the world. Want to know the weather – look out the window!
Make a conscious effort to go tech free for just an hour. If you’re rock star, take it to the next level!
