DIY Natural Carpet Freshener
Let’s face it, nothing is worse than a funky carpet. So many things can contribute to that un-fresh aroma stuck in your carpet or rug. Puppy, kitty or junior can all be culprits. The lack of deep steam cleaning as well as dirt build-up can take a toll. Over time even the best attempts at cleaning just won’t get rid of the smell.
If you’re health conscious, you will want to be careful about what you use to clean and deodorize your carpet and rugs. Don’t be tempted to use harsh chemicals. Most deodorizers contain chemicals, some hidden in the fragrance, which can cause skin and respiratory irritation. Companies do not have to report the ingredients in fragrance. Therefore any product listing fragrance can contain a host of harmful chemicals and you would never know. Check the labels and if you can’t pronounce the ingredient or you see the word fragrance – skip it! It’s way too easy to make your own. The great thing is that you’ll know every ingredient.
– Baking Soda (get the generic or store brand)
– Lemon Essential Oil (100% pure therapeutic grade from Young Living)
– Small mason jar
– Card Stock (optional)
Add 1-2 cups of baking soda to the mason jar. Add 10-20 drops of Young Living Lemon Essential Oil. YL’s Christmas Spirit Essential Oil blend works nicely too, especially during the holidays. Cover the mason jar and shake to mix. Remove the inner jar top and use it to trace a circle on card stock. Punch holes into the card stock and replace in your jar top to create a shaker.
To use the carpet freshener, shake onto the carpet and allow it to sit for 20 minutes. Vacuum and enjoy the fresh scent!
